Living room design

Living room ideas that actually work.

The living room is where a home's whole mood is set — and where most people feel stuck. Here is genuinely useful, evergreen advice for getting the layout, light and layering right, plus how to see your own room redesigned in two looks for a free preview.

Where to start

The living room essentials.

Start with the layout, not the sofa

Decide what the room is really for — conversation, TV, reading, all three — and anchor the seating around that, not around the walls. Floating a sofa off the wall almost always makes a room feel more considered.

Leave roughly 45–55cm between the sofa and coffee table so there is room for legs and for setting a cup down, and keep clear walkways of around 75–90cm through the space.

Anchor the seating with a rug large enough that at least the front legs of every major piece sit on it. A rug that is too small is the single most common thing that makes a living room feel unfinished.

Layer your lighting

Aim for at least three light sources at different heights — overhead, a floor or table lamp, and something low or accent — rather than relying on a single ceiling fixture.

Warm globes (around 2700K) make a living space feel relaxed; put lamps on the same warm tone so the room reads consistent at night.

If the room is dark, lean into it with deeper, warmer tones rather than fighting it with stark white — depth reads as cosy, not gloomy.

Build a palette in layers of texture

Pick a quiet base (walls, large sofa, rug) and let colour and pattern come through cushions, throws and art that are easy to change.

Mix materials — timber, linen, wool, a little metal or stone — so a neutral room still feels rich rather than flat.

Give the eye one or two moments of contrast: a darker armchair, a piece of art, a plant with real height.
